Idaho is home to some fantastic state parks, but some parks don’t get the recognition they deserve. High plains and farmland give way to crystal blue springs and churning waterfalls. These little known Idaho state parks are the hidden gems of the Gem State.
Niagara Springs State Park
Descend into Snake River canyon and wander through a green oasis. Get up close to the canyon walls, see the bright blue water shoot from their sides and flow down into the Snake River. Diving deeper into this spring sanctuary, you can fish off the docks at Crystal Springs or enjoy watching the waterfowl dip and dive in various ponds around the area. It’s one of the smaller Idaho State Parks, but it’s packed with exciting spots to explore.

Malad Gorge State Park
One of the most overlooked Idaho State Parks is Malad Gorge. I don’t mean that metaphorically. People quite literally drive over it without knowing. If you’ve ever driven from Boise to Twin Falls, you have gone right over the top of a 60-foot waterfall known as the Devil’s Washbowl. Take a pit stop and be mesmerized by this giant waterfall hidden from street view. Then hike along the canyon rim to find more vibrant-blue waterfalls dropping into the gorge similar to Niagra Springs.
Box Canyon State Park
The unbeknownst traveler may see parts of Idaho and see no more than agricultural land and dairy pastures. But hidden in the southwest region of Idaho are some natural wonders. A perfect example of this is Box Canyon State Park.
Earl M. Hardy Box Canyon Springs Nature Preserve is located near Buhl, ID. An easy one-mile walk to the lookout rewards you with views of sparkling blue spring water. Follow the edge of the canyon and make your way down to the canyon floor. The trail winds through some tall brush, eventually leading to a 20-foot tall waterfall!

Chad can be summed up by his idea of a perfect day: Waking up early to watch the sunrise over the mountains, warm cup of coffee in hand then grabbing his camera and fly rod, hitting the trail to explore some uncharted territory followed by cold beers and campfire steaks.
