Review of GrandPa’s FireGrill by Light My Fire of Sweden

GrandPa's Firegrill

GrandPa’s FireGrill by Light my Fire of Sweden is a unique lightweight grill. Simply find a sturdy stick and whittle the end to a fine point. Clamp your grill to your pointy stick and you’re in business  Unlike a heavy stationary grate, GrandPa’s FireGrill gives you the ability to freely move and rotate the grill just like roasting a marshmallow. The basket clamps down to allow you to cook virtually anything in your imagination with some modifications to the size of the food.

What problem does it solve?

The more things you can cook over an open flame the better. One big problem GrandPa’s FireGrill solves is cooking over a fire without needing a grate.

After a long day of hiking, I want to come back and have a protein-packed feast, whether it be a burger, steak or bacon wrapped chicken breast. Let’s face facts, it’s not really camping if all your meals are cooked in a Jetboil. So to make this flame-broiled grub I am either going to need my own camp stove, which although is convenient, kind of takes the fun out of cooing in the outdoors or a fire pit with a grate.  Most campgrounds have the latter,  but what about those times when you don’t stay at a maintained campsite? Well, you could go out and purchase a grate or steal one from your BBQ at home. That would certainly solve this dilemma.

Now let’s say you want to go backpacking. You have now become reliant on the tasty grilled meats and you’re gonna need a way to fuel this wonderful addiction while in the backcountry.  There is no way in hell you’re going to haul that extra weight in your pack. So you can either find a gullible friend with a strong back to carry it for you or you can bring along GrandPa’s FireGrill!

What to like about it

  • Lightweight
  • Easy to setup (once you figure it out)
  • Folds-up to about the size of a small dinner plate

What not to like about it

  • A sturdy stick is not always close by
  • With only two clamp positions, larger food gets squished.
  • You’re going to need some cooking spray to prevent food from sticking to the metal

Who is this for?

If you’re traveling through the woods on your next backpacking trip and you decide you want to grill up some deliciousness, you’re going to want to have GrandPa’s FireGrill handy.
